Strange Brew : Koffee House Of Vibe

Every Wednesday, the musical gang known as HOVAS (House Of Vibe All Stars) celebrates with a cheap time at a place where everybody knows your name.

If you've been, you know.

If you've never been, and you like funk, r&b, reggae, rock and soul performed by the funkiest crew west of Detroit, (or at least north of Abbot Kinney) tonight's the night.

AND SPEAKING OF BREW:
Koffeehouse Sessions is upon us. The first Thursday of every month is the singer/songwriter showcase that has the industry buzzing. The good people at Spin PR are sponsoring the night, which features Harvelle's "pin-up girl" Jessie Payo, Lost In Los Angeles, Terry Ilous and Cliff Beach. An open mic kicks things off at 6:30.

The Koffeehouse Rules

First Thursdays mean one thing : Koffeehouse night at Club Harvelles.

I would define Koffeehouse night as a singer/songwriter's paradise. While the doors swing open around 7, several stalwart ernest musicians line-up to perform at the "open mic" portion of the evening. A kudos to this portion of the show's Rick Cornette, who impressed me with his singing voice.

Shortly following, a series of more established acts - acts that stretch the boundries of the genre - performed. Sets by Nikki & Rich, Chris Accardo, Red Arrow Messenger and Frentik's Emily Jaye were warmly received by the lively crowd.

Koffeehouse. Sessions. BOOM!

The first Thursday of the month at Harvelles is Koffeehouse, which encompasses an open mic starting at around 7, followed by sets by up and coming singer/songwriters.

Tonight's roster included the Dylanesque Ken Will Morton, the enormously popular Brock Baker (pictured below),

The Other Side Of Morning, who brought their heavy psychedelic folk - complete with a flying-V guitar - to roaring applause of approval,

and Boom Boom Boom who brought their original all acoustic bluesy flava and proved their songwriting and musical ability. And minimally too - percussion/upright bass/guitar (+harmonica) - three pieces, no electricity. You could understand all the words too.

Sponsoring the night was the Fender Music Foundation - a non profit that gives instruments to music education programs. Publicly supported, their website is well worth checking out. (Shout-out to CJ!)
