It's a big weekend in Santa Monica! 

It's a Soul Double Header on Friday night. The uptown New Orleans influenced sound of Adrian Hibbs will make you feel good! Dessy DiLauro brings her distinctive jazzy sound and her amazing voice to complete the night. Saturday night is alright for fighting according to Elton John. Also alright, Jimmy Z and The Z Tribe! World famous Etta James sideman, sax/harmonica player Jimmy Z throws down the electric Chicago style blues. Jamie James opens the night with an early set at 8:30. Sunday brings The Toledo Show with their film noir soul and femme fatale cabaret - a satisfying way to end another perfect weekend. Harvelle's Santa Monica is located at 1432 4th St. Santa Monica. Ample parking in the structure just South of the club.

Ringing in the new year at Harvelle's seemed like the right way to start off 2011. The music, the people, the patrons, the staff - everyone is there for a good drama-free time. And that's what they deliver. Yes, there's party favors and a champagne toast at midnight, but you can get that anywhere. What makes Harvelle's special is the live music.

This year Guitar Shorty, Jimmy Z (sax, harmonica, vocals), Kirk Fletcher (guitar/vocals) and Jeff Young (keys and vocals) formed a sort of blues supergroup with power to spare. They rocked the crowd until way past midnight with the crowd still cheering for one more song!

Well now, we've all got another 365 days ahead to make some changes, change some vices and maybe pick up a few new ones.

You never can tell.

Blowin' Smoke : What A Lovely Way To Burn!!

First time I've seen the Blowin' Smoke since Canadian guitarist Dave Rave's return to the lower 48 and specifically the glamour of L.A.(!).

Possibly buoyed by the prescence of Guitar Shorty, Dave played the Strat. He sliced and diced it every which way he could. Hail! Hail! Dave Rave!! Blowin' Smoke is big and baaad and always showcases these amazing women singers. It's a one-of-a-kind blues experience!

Jimmy Z : A Night With The Z-Tribe

Jimmy Z. brought his Z-Tribe through Harvelle's last night and set the roof ablaze with scorching blues and white hot performances by everyone in the band. The pictures hardly do the night justice, as Jimmy Z - on sax, harmonica and vocals - led his group through hotter-than-hell versions of some classic blues and Jimmy Z originals. Don Swanson from Cafe R&B was on hand and sat in on the drums for a number.

It's a dark erotic burlesque cabaret. What does that mean? Toledo and his backing band paint musical pictures filled with grit and romance. The Dames are his impossibly sexy troupe of dancers that thrill the crowd.

A Saturday night, a packed house, a few cocktails and some of the best Chicago blues you'll hear outside the windy city. Jimmy Z plays harmonica and sax on tour with Etta James, and to paraphrase her - a better bluesman would be hard to find. Jimmy Z's got quite a pedigree, having played with everyone from Tom Petty to N.W.A. His performances at Harvelle's are legendary, so come check it out.

The sax and blues harp playing Jimmy Z will kick your 4th of July weekend into over-drive and set the tone for the whole holiday. Creating his own fireworks, Jimmy Z will keep the dance floor packed and the joint jumpin'. 

Saturday Night : 4th of July proper with Soul Funk!. Ryan Cross brings it live with a roster of guests dropping by. Everyone's on the Westside! Come join the party and get soul-funked!

Jimmy Z. took over last week and dazzled the crowd with his awesome displays of  sax and harmonica mastery. Etta James' main (sax) man showed why he's a world class player. One of Harvelle's favorites, Jimmy Z. always throws down and keeps the dance floor packed.

It's always awesome when Jimmy Z drops by to Harvelle's. The accomplished saxophonist/harmoni-cat can turn the energy of the joint up just by strolling on stage. A harpist's harpist, Jimmy Z likes to play the blues here, but his work with all types of music with all types of musicians truly defines him as the world class musician that he is!
