Koffeehouse Sessions :
Catching Ghosts & Spinning Tales

The Koffeehouse night at Harvelle's has developed into one of the premiere showcases of new talent in Los Angeles.
Tonight's event opened with Genuine Brandish.
The duo of Ariana Hall and guitarist/singer Tony Clinebell are at the center of this "group" which incorporates collaborations with percussionists, singers and poets. Arianna multi-tasked, tapping her glockenspiel, playing the piano & guitar and sharing her voice.
Chris Accardo has brought his singer/songwriter game to a whole new level. With his talented backing musicians Jacob Fatoorechi and Reade Pryor, they created sweeping cosmic landscapes from Accardo's emotional radio-ready songs. Chris' singing and playing surrounds the room with intense drama and nothing but big things are in his future. I'm gonna call attention to a favorite jam of his I like called "Maybe".

Caught A Ghost brought a 7 piece group - with an 'artsy' stage set-up - (primarily dressed in white - with a film loop of various clips and images projected onto themselves as they performed) - in which they presented an original update of the Motown/Stax sound, complete with horn arrangements, keys, bass, drums and a little shing-a-ling guitar, with backing vocals courtesy of the lovely Tessa Thompson. Tessa, who is a talented actress stood slightly "stage right" of the lead singer, backing him with her heart and soul (and a tiny tambourine).

Koffeehouse sessions is held at Harvelle's the first Thursday of the month.

KoffeeMouse Sessions

Koffeehouse sessions at Harvelle's is a very cool showcase for up and coming talent. Tonight's roster included Mansions On The Moon, Trevor Davis (left) and Stacy Clark.

Stacy Clark and her band (Brian-keys, Brandon-bass, Tyler-drums, Blaine-guitar) kicked off the night with a set of covers and originals that showcased her strong voice.

The singing and guitar playing of Trevor Davis (who was accompanied by Darla on percussion and backing vocals) filled the room with a big sound despite their minimal line-up. Trevor's Michael Jackson influenced set was original and fun.

Mansions On The Moon (Ted Wendler, Ben Hazlegrove and Lane Shaw) are a mystery. While very few people in the room had actually heard them or seen them (this was their first live performance), the place was packed with people there to check them out.
Anastasia Roark hosted the evening, which also included an open mic session prior to the scheduled performers. Special mention go to The Councilmen - a Bakersfield based band who showed some real pop sensibility.

Koffeehouse Sessions : Out of The Fire...

Zosia's effervescent. The Koffeehouse/BMI Sessions at Harvelle's have long garnered the attention of the industry, and some of the most buzzworthy acts in Southern California are dropping by and proving why they are potential future stars.
But back to Zosia. [check out her web prescence: YouTube, MySpace, iTunes]
Fresh of face - with her blonde hair piled high in a bun on the top of her head and a black babydoll frock - these are just accoutrements to surround her sweet voice and unconventional backing (percussion and reverb-y electric guitar) which created a swirly tunnel of sound. She was like a Holly Golightly via 1980's label Le Disque du Crepescule. Zosia's spontaneity was due in part to musicians Anthony Sanudo and Irwin who were enlisted as her backing musicians at the last minute.
Chris Accardo delivered a passionate set - his songwriting and singing stronger than ever; adding some real strength and masculinity to the genre. A powerful performance! Chris Accardo with John Schroeder and Reade Pryor

Dani Nicole set the night off with her band that included Chris Vazquez, Jake Hayden and Ruby Biloskirka.

Jessie Payo LIVE!! : Breakin' Her Fast

Jessie Payo recently announced on Facebook that she was taking a month off from singing. That time frame now over with, here she was at Harvelle's - looking great - but it was those in attendance who truly reaped the benefit of her respite. Sounding as great (or better) than she looked, Jessie quickly warmed the room with her soulful originals that she generously shares.
Jessie's performance tonight was part of the Koffeehouse Sessions, held at Harvelle's every 1st Thursday of the month, and her band included Johnny Stachela on guitar (above) and Frank Abraham on bass.

TOMORROW: TGIF Blues with Zac Harmon!!

Thanks to David & Cevin.
Special thanks to the Harvelle's staff : Candise, Mika, Guy, Samantha, Joseph, and Ernesto
